Event Overview
National Youth Day is commemorated annually on 16 June to recognise the Soweto Uprising where students revolted against compulsory teaching in Afrikaans. “What started as a harmless demonstrational march, turned into a brutal, violent riot that spread all across South Africa”. This year marks 46 of the fateful event. Countrywide commemorations are conducted under the theme “promoting sustainable livelihood resilience of young people for a better tomorrow”.
